North Carolina Security License

North Carolina Security License

You need to be registered as a legal security guard before you get a job in any company in North Carolina. Therefore, your first step is to get your North Carolina security license from NC Department of Public Safety.

The state’s requirements differ for unarmed and armed guards. To clarify, let’s list each of them below:

Primary requirements

  • Be at least 18 years old (armed: 21 or older) and US citizen/resident alien.
  • Have a good moral character and not be guilty in any conviction.
  • Don’t have any mental defects or diseases.
  • Don’t have a guard registration cancellation.

These needs are one of the most commons among states. For instance, you can find similarities with the Maryland Security License.

Training and appliance

Unarmed:

The NC state requires you to take 16 hours of training. Correspondingly, those courses must cover:

  • 3 hours – Legal Issues for Security Officers / Emergency Response/ Patrol Procedures/ Note Taking and Report Writing
  • 1 hour – The Security Officer in North Carolina / Deportment
  • 2/3 hours – Communications

Also, you must complete 4 hours of classroom instruction during 20 days. To explain, it includes:

  • 3 hours – Legal Issues for Security Officers
  • 1 hour – The Security Officer in North Carolina

Armed:

In this case, you must study for 20 hours guarded by a certified trainer. To clarify, those indicate the following:

  • 8 hours – handgun fundamentals
  • 4 hours – legal limitations: familiarity with rules and regulations/night firing
  • 3 hours – handgun maintenance and operation
  • 1 hour – range firing procedures (handgun safety)

Application Process

After successfully completing the training course, get hired by a licensed private protective services company. You will get your name, social security number, address, and the date of employment submitted by the company you work for.

After 20 days, your company submits:

  • Your fingerprints on standard F.B.I. applicant cards: The fee is $38.00.
  • A JPEG digital photograph on CD, floppy disk, or via mail
  • The statements of results of a local criminal records check by the Superior Court Clerk
  • A certificate verifying unarmed training completion signed by Board-certified trainers
  • The registration application fee: $30. It is non-refundable.

So, you will get a copy of your application. It is for serving legally during the first 30 days of employment. Moreover, you will also have a registration pocket card with your photo and name on it.

The above-mentioned points partially correspond with the ones for armed guards. However, there are some exceptions:

  • The company you may work for will claim 2 JPEG digital photographs.
  • You should provide proof of corresponding to the age claims (being at least 21).
  • The application registration fee is in this case $45. Similarly, it is non-refundable.

Renewal

In North Carolina, you have to renew it every year, as it expires by the end of the year. The fee is $30 ($45 for armed guards). In other words, the process includes:

  1. Completing and submitting the renewal application form.
  2. Paying the fee to the PPSB: either by cashier’s check or in a money order.
