North Carolina Barber License

North Carolina Barber License

According to the U.S. Department Bureau of Labor Statistics, all states mandate that a barber should obtain a license to practice in that state. North Carolina is not an exception.

Do I need to go to barber school to get a license?

The answer is yes. You must attend a barber school that has been approved by the Board. Currently, there are about 50 authorized schools in NC. You should choose and find the best match for you. In a beauty school, you’ll start with the basics which include general information on that wonderful profession. Then, you will smoothly move to more advanced techniques of shaving, hair coloring and cutting.

To enroll in a barber school, you must submit the following documents to the North Carolina Board of Barber Examiners:

  • Completed Application signed by a representative of the school you plan to attend
  • FBI criminal history summary
  • $25.00 student permit fee

You need to earn 1,528 hours to be qualified for the permit. The program may cover a lot more areas than you might think. It may include such themes as;

  • Anatomy and physiology
  • Haircutting, coloring, and shaving
  • Massage and facial treatment
  • Proper sterilization
  • Bleaching

It takes about 9 to 18 months to earn the qualification. Of course, it also depends on your schedule and the timeline of the specific school.

How to attain an apprenticeship license?

Once you have completed your education, it’s time to apply for your North Carolina barber license. Remember that, unlike other states like Ohio, NC requires also a 12-month apprenticeship. Your work should be supervised by an industry professional. Then, you can pass a state board examination and finally get your certificate.

All you have to do to apply for the exam is fill out an application and pay an $85 fee.

After the Board has reviewed your application, you will pass both the written and practical exams with a score of 70% or above.

How to become a registered barber?

You can apply to take the registered test as soon as your apprenticeship is completed. The exam will take roughly an hour and will consist only of practical assessments. The questions are the same as for apprenticeship. You must pay an examination fee of $85 and submit an application along with an apprenticeship experience affidavit.

Once you pass the test, the Board will immediately issue you a full NC barber license.

How to Renew your License?

It’s no surprise that your permission should be renewed. In NC, you have to do it every year. You only need to fill in the online form and pay $50.

Note that the state does not require any continuing education credits. However, keep growing in the beauty industry and build a career you love.
